Interesting, isn’t it?  A right-wing blowhard mentions the Tides Foundation, a viewer straps on a bullet-proof vest, grabs some guns, swigs some liquid courage and heads out to be a “patriot.”  Another right-wing gun-owner, a disaffected truck driver whose mind has been warped beyond recognition, whose bookshelf contains screeds by Michael Savage, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly marches into a church and starts blowing away “liberals.”  A twenty-something in a cab in New York slashes the throat of a cab driver for the crime of Muslim In America.  A right-winger, libertarian, Laroucher flies his private plane into the IRS building in Austin, Texas.  Another right-wing assassin guns down a doctor in the vestibule of his church.  In each of these instances, the right-wing hate machine declares “Hey, he was k-k-k-kraaaaazey!  You can’t blame US!”  Since most of us are nice, friendly, kum-by-yah singing reasonable people, we, of course, DON’T blame them, or demand accountability, or demand that their promotion of these horrors cease and desist as the clear and present dangers that they are.

Not today.  Oh, HELL, no.  Not today.

T.S. Eliot said “April is the cruelest month.”  Shrinks will tell you February is, when more people commit suicide.  December is hell on the lonely and alone.  Me?  I hate August.  It’s a new feeling, but I do.  I loathe August, and I’m glad to see it gone.  No good comes of the Dog Days.

I’m not sure who the front-runner is tonight: those 87,000 idiots who attended Beck’s “I Have A Scheme” speech or ME, who sat and watched and tweeted the thing.  Sure, I could excuse myself watching it with a convenient “Know Thine Enemy,” but I’m not sure it sticks.  Mainly, I watched it because I wanted to compare the live reality with what the ForProfit Media would report.  The FPM did NOT score well.  If you want to see what it looks like when the FPM fawns over the repiglickens (as if you don’t see it every blessed day) just have a look here, but try not to look if you’re snacking or eating or generally have anything on your stomach: NY Times Article

It’s Friday on the Front Porch!  Time to gab a bit, talk about whatever the spirit moves us to discuss.

Three things: Katrina, BeckerHeads, and an election nearly no one knows about.  Odd as it may seem, they all tie together.  Tomorrow, of course, is Glenn Beck’s big absurdist set-piece of misspells and bad grammar.  It’s also West Virginia’s only chance to keep Joe Manchin from screwing us for the rest of President Obama’s term.  And Katrina: of all the “honor” Glenn Beck plans to “restore,” one wonders if New Orleans has any place in the plan, the thing that  will be, he says, a “miracle.”

I’ll talk with Monique Harden from Advocates for Environmental Human Rights (www.ehumanrights.org).  We’ll see how far we, as a nation, still have to go before we can talk about having restored much of anything to the citizens of New Orleans and the greater Gulf Coast.  I suspect the conversation won’t be the same pablum we’ve been handed for the last couple of days on CNN.

It’s those connections that don’t look like connections that often carry the most meaning.  Boots on the porch rail on a Friday on the Front Porch on The H.O.R.N., we’ll look for some of ‘em this evening.

It’s Friday on the Front Porch, and there’s plenty to jaw about as we sit around the washtub and work over that pitcher of sweet tea.

NOTE: I will do everything in my power to make this a not-a-mosque-free program.  I’m so sick of that phoney “story” I could puke.  With a possible exception, a sidebar far, far from New York city and all that “hallowed ground.”

Of particular note this evening, a couple of things: (1) Israel and the Palestinians are allegedly talking again, at the same time the Obama Administration has convinced Israel not to bomb Iran . . . for a year or so, at least.  This comes at the same time a nine-year-old video of Benyamin Netanyahu has come to light that SHOULD have all Americans fit to be tied.  Mostly, not so much.

(2)  The American Dairy Association should replace it’s “Got Milk” campaign with “Got Genetically Modified Milk”.  That, and Monsanto’s ongoing effort to bio-engineer a worldwide famine is more than a little unsettling;

(3) So is this bedbug thing.  Bedbugs?  BEDBUGS?  A growing national problem?  Really?  Bedbugs?  I dare not ask “What’s next?”

(4) A mini-prayer meetin’ for Friday.  We’ll call it a “Revival” since we didn’t have Prayer Meetin’ this week.  Ever wonder why I loathe “christian” rock?  I have examples.

Well, here it is!

I generally don’t expend a lot of effort getting interviews.  The process itself can be quite time-consuming, and most times I’d rather spend in conversation with the varied and fascinating members of the H.O.R.N. family.

This, however, is different. Tony Bourdain, author, teevee personality and world traveler will join us this evening.  Without being overtly political, his recently released book “Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook” is a joy to read and ponder.  The pondering, you’ll find, takes much more time than the reading.  There’s SUBSTANCE here, without all the snotty pretensions of folks who aim to deliver “substance.”  In a world of “reality” television, Anthony Bourdain delivers something much more rare: honest information delivered as honestly as television can.

I don’t generally do “celebrity” interviews.  You know that.  That I wanted Mr. Bourdain on the show says more than that I’m a fan.  It says I think he’s got something to say that bears hearing.  It says I think it will be, in fact, “conversation radio.”

Fresh from a series of hot showers to cleanse me of the filth through which we waded last night, I’ve emerged clean, purified and ready for an evening on the front porch.

Another shower may be required.

“Don’t Eat the Seafood.”  At least that’s the advice from a number of Gulf shrimpers and fishermen.  As a devotee, myself, of the delights of the raw oyster, I fear I’d be put off them forever if I, like those fishermen, were to shuck one open and find that delightful mollusk bathed in crude.  That’s “Exorcist” material.

I can’t wait to share with you the latest love-letter to Big Coal from West Virginia’s ForProfit media, owned, by the way, by Big Coal.  You have to hear it to believe it.

The GOP still hasn’t figured out a way to shut Sharon Angle up, and it’s getting embarrassing.

And, once again ahead of the curve, we, who asked “Who’s Breitbart’s next target,” now know: it’s Maxine Waters.  James O’Keefe is back on the loose, fresh from a federal guilty plea.  We’ll go to the Radio Blackboard of the InterWebTubes for a lesson for young Mr. O’Keefe.

We can only put off the nastiest of the nasty for so long.  There are only so many Hutton Gibsons in the world to give us a little relief from the hells of present existence.  As the punchline from my favorite joke puts it: “Coffee break’s over.  Back on your heads.”  Indeed, and it feels like the stuff’s piled to neck-deep instead of knee-.

There’s a trial going on.  U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua Claus threatened 15 year old Guantanamo Concentration Camp inmate Omar Khadr with gang rape if he didn’t confess to whatever it was Satan Claus wanted him to confess.  At the trial now under way for Mr. Khadr, who has spent some 8+ years in our concentration camp, a judge at his “Military Tribunal” (read: Kangaroo Court, Court of Star Chamber, Abortion of Justice, etc.) has ruled that his confession obtained under threat of rape is perfectly acceptable for use by the Persecution, er, “Prosecution.”

I can’t write any more.  I’d rather not be vomiting when the show starts.
