Our first nominee is our studio streaming computer. With the production machine having been acting up of late, I thought we were OK with the other one. That’ll teach ME to think! It’s dead. Dead as a stone as of Saturday afternoon. That’s left me filling gaps and going crazy for the rest of my less-than-restful weekend. Joy! Bliss! Glee! Wait a minute. I think that last one’s trademarked or copyrighted or something.
Anyway, our second nominee is one of those twin-sons-of-different-mothers type things. Two stories. In the first, a Saudi official working in the Kingdom’s L.A. office came out of the closet. For those of you who ever feared doing it, this guy has it ALL over you. He’s applied to the U.S. for asylum because he knows he’ll be murdered publicly by his government if he ever goes home. You see, not only is he gay, he’s ALSO friends with a Jewish lady. That’s two strikes and we’ll just take the third “as read.” Shoot! He couldn’t even go to Israel. They’d probably convict him of rape.
The second half of our twins comes to us from Tennessee, where a lesbian couple had their home burned down the other night, the word “Queers” spray-painted on the smoking rubble’s garage.
With me so far? Thought so. What do these two stories have in common? Religion? No. The Kingdom’s run by Muslims. Anti-gay hate in the U.S. is fuelled by Christian bigotry. Gender? Nope. Saudi guy’s a guy. The ladies in Tennessee ain’t. What, then?: This: FUNDAMENTALISM! In all the din of the last few weeks and the stories about non-mosques and qu’ran-burnings, everyone but US has missed the point: it’s not about the religion. It’s about the way the religion is approached. It’s about religion used as a lever to drive humanity’s progress BACKWARD. Fundamentalism is a threat to humanity on an existential level, whether it be christian, muslim or jewish fundamentalists. If there were Mayan fundamentalists knuckle-walking around out there, I’d include them, too. But there aren’t. It’s the monotheistic fundamentalists. And they are, as sure as Dog made little green apples, some right sick bastards.
